# **Nation State Attacks on Critical Infrastructure – Assess, Understand, Protect**

Putting a cellular router on SCADA, PLCs, or HMIs considerably improves your efficiency
and allows you to remotely access these interfaces – it also considerably increases
your risk. Systems become scannable and easily accessed by anyone who stumbles across
them. 

It is easier than ever for threat actors to gather detailed information about you
and your water systems using Open Source Intelligence (OSINT). Widely available 
tools like [Shodan.io](http://shodan.io) can provide these threat actors with a 
huge list of critical infrastructure systems that are publicly exposed without proper
access controls like single sign-on, multi-factor authentication, and privileged
access management.

More and more incidents seem to be popping up. The Muleshoe, Texas and Aliquippa,
Pennsylvania incidents involved hackers gaining unauthorized access to computer 
systems controlling water infrastructure operations, causing a water tank overflow
in Muleshoe and forcing Aliquippa to switch to manual operations. This session will
